MARCH 2020

“YOU JUST HEARD ABOUT GOD, BUT HERE YOU WILL SEE HIM”

“When we first came to Canada, suffering a lot back home, everyone we met here told us that “you just heard about God, but here you will see him”. In the beginning, I felt jealous as a Christian person, with a very strong faith, who used to live, study, work, serve God and also raise kids in very hard situations … so how can all of what I went through was ‘just heard about him’? After a while I realized the meaning of those words when I found the guardian angels, The Catholic Schools (HCDSB). Those people really embrace your family and overwhelm you with love. Supporting you with a lot of things like a studying device for your kid to stay on the right track, coats for the winter, Food, trips, uniforms and also trying to direct you what to do in your life. May our Lord bless them all. They are really amazing people. You will see and touch God in them starting from teachers, office staff, the great school manager and the amazing board employees.”

We are so appreciative of the support we receive from people like you. Support from the community allowed us to partner with the school to help this family in need on a couple occasions. Thank you!

LENTEN PRAYER

Almighty and Everlasting God,
You have given the human race
Jesus Christ our Savior as a model of humility.
He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man
And giving His life on the Cross.
Help us to bear witness to You
By following His example of suffering
And make us worthy to share in His Resurrection.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son.

Amen.

SCHOOL TRIPS FOR KIDS PROJECTS!

Poverty remains a powerful factor in whether a student succeeds in school.

Opportunities for many of our youth are not equal.

Learning opportunities outside of the classroom often have costs associated with them.

These costs are barriers to learning for children living in low-income households (an estimated 1100 Oakville HCDSB students and 900 Burlington HCDSB students).

Thanks to Burlington Foundation and the Oakville Community Foundation’s crowd funding campaign Give Oakville, for their support of these two initiatives over the next year – one in Burlington, one in Oakville. These projects will help 43 children and youth to succeed in school, promote positive mental health & wellness, and inclusion opportunities.

At-risk students & lower rates of academic success are the challenges the Ministry of Education’s Equity & Inclusive Education Strategy addresses. An achievement gap- can form between low-income students and their peers. Social exclusion, shame, anger, stigma, low self-esteem, low confidence and loss of hope are all issues related to student poverty.

Research shows that academic success increases when barriers to inclusion are identified & removed.

We need to support our children with Equity & Inclusion, so they can reach their full potential.

HCCEF already supports HCDSB students with multi-day school trips (i.e. Grade 8 Trip; Outdoor Education Trip). These Projects will allow us, over the next year, to give additional opportunities to low-income students from Burlington and Oakville HCDSB schools.

Thank you again to Burlington Foundation and the Oakville Community Foundation for helping students in need to succeed in school.

If you know of a Burlington or Oakville student who would benefit from this financial assistance, please contact Marc Clare for more information – clarema@hccef.org; 905-632-6314 x248.
