IMPACTS+ July Edition

JULY 2018

“Once the child’s home life was more stable, she was able to learn. So this child with a mild intellectual delay is now working towards her high school diploma, which has changed her life and her life trajectory incredibly.” HCDSB Social Worker

“FG is a 16 year old student whose circumstances have required her to live independently at a young age. The support from HCCEF was used to purchase groceries and small household items, such as dishes and cutlery when FG moved into a rented room situation. Receiving the funding has been evidence for FG that her school team wishes to support her to reach her potential despite her difficult life circumstances.” – HCDSB Social Worker

“The family has just suffered a major loss. The mom passed away in the winter. Dad had to leave his job in order to care for Mom and get extra treatment out of country, which was a major expense.  They have three children, age 5, 8 and 10.  We would like to spend this money in grocery gift cards at the Superstore – this way clothing can be purchased for this family as well.” HCDSB Principal

“Please know you have had an incredible impact on her dreams and hopes for the future!” – HCDSB Principal

HCCEF was able to help these students and families, thanks to people like you who support the HCCEF Student Guardian Program!

Congratulations, you helped these students to succeed in school.

Thank You!

Thank You!

Amazing support from TD again this year. They recently donated $5,000 to the HCCEF Student Guardian Program.

A Canadian Teachers’ Federation Report indicates that Low-income students experience:

  • reduced motivation to learn
  • delayed cognitive development
  • lower achievement
  • less participation in extra-curricular activities
  • lower career aspirations
  • interrupted school attendance
  • lower post-secondary attendance
  • an increased risk of illiteracy
  • higher drop-out rates

Poverty remains a powerful factor in whether a student succeeds in school.

Students who are economically vulnerable, have challenges meeting their basic needs, and therefore have challenges to succeed in school. Success in school will help to close the achievement gap for lower-income learners.

Thank you to TD for your kindness, and for helping students to succeed in school.

Recently 50 backpacks with school supplies were donated to HCCEF to distribute to students in need. This fantastic donation was courtesy of the Diocesan Youth Rally in May.

What a great way to show students in need that their community cares about them.

Thank you!
