JULY 2020

YOUR IMPACT ON HCDSB STUDENTS & FAMILIES IN FINANCIAL NEED

Thank you for helping HCDSB students and families like this, who are struggling to purchase basic necessities.

COVID-19 HAS EMPHASIZED THE NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY

In March to June last year HCCEF helped 53 HCDSB students. This year, due to COVID-19, the need grew to 252 HCDSB students from March to June – a 475% increase.

Thank you to our donors for allowing us to continue to say “yes” to helping our neighbours in need.

OUR COMMUNITY CARES ABOUT OUR NEIGHBOURS IN NEED

Poverty remains a powerful factor in whether a student succeeds in school. This year, that has been emphasized even more than ever. Struggling HCDSB families urgently needed your help to purchase food and other basic necessities like clothing, footwear and personal hygiene items.

We asked you to help your neighbours in need, and boy did you ever respond.

For 6 weeks in April and May, we sent an Urgent Appeal to the community to help us continue to say “Yes” to supporting families with basic necessities. With the help of an anonymous donor, who agreed to match up to $10,000 in donations, you contributed almost $30,000. Thank you!

This will help us to continue to say “yes” to HCDSB students and families who are struggling.

24 HOUR FAST SMASHES ITS GOAL

On June 3rd to 4th, many in the Halton Catholic Community rallied to support HCDSB students and families in financial need by participating in the HCCEF 24 Hour Fast. Our goal was $25,000. Together, we raised $34,630…WOW! Thank you!

Participants registered for the 24 Hour Fast, then similar to a Walk-a-thon, asked their friends, family and others to sponsor them. People were welcome to fast from anything they wanted – i.e. food, social media, caffeine – their choice.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

So many participants/teams went above and beyond what we had asked them to do – amazing inititatives, spectacular social media posts, and sharing their “I Joined Because…” moments. Thank you!

Check out how all of the teams and individuals did on our 24 Hour Fast Page.

Two highlights of the week were the inspirational initiatives by two HCDSB Principals.

Josey Guerin (Principal at St. Benedict) walked 24 km in 24 hours on Sunday May 31, said 5 decades of the Rosary at sunrise, at noon and at sunset on Monday June 1, and then fasted from food for 24 hours starting Tuesday June 2. The St. Benedict Community were amazingly supportive and got involved in Josey’s initiative as well. Read more about his journey on Inside Halton. Thank you Josey and the St. Benedict School Community!

Marie Murad (Principal at Holy Rosary Milton) loves to walk. She challenged herself to walk 25,000 steps on Thursday June 4. She kept us up to date on her progress with videos throughout the day, and ended up walking over 29,000 steps…amazing! Thank you Marie for being so inspiring, and thank you to the Holy Rosary Milton School Community for being so supportive.

SOME OF OUR EVENTS ARE PIVOTING AND ADJUSTING

Please save the date for the following:

1) HCCEF Charity Golf Classic

Rescheduled date – Wednesday September 30 at Piper’s Heath Golf Club

Golfers have been enjoying great weather on local courses.

We are planning a modified version of this fantastic event to help keep everyone safe.

Stay tuned for more information in the weeks to come.

2) HCCEF Evening with Bishop Crosby

Wednesday November 4, 2020

Given the likelihood that we will not be able to gather in banquet halls any time soon, our planning committee is working on a spectacular “virtual” version of this gathering of the Halton Catholic Community. We will have more details in September.

HCCEF CONTINUES TO OPERATE DURING THE SUMMER

Financial need does not disappear in the summer months.

HCCEF is ready to receive applications from HCDSB schools to continue to support students and families in need during the summer.

Applications on behalf of struggling HCDSB students and families can be coordinated through the school Principal.

The online application is accessible to HCDSB staff.
